Kevin joined Arup in January 2014 as an electrical engineer and is involved in the design, management, and contract administration of several projects.

His design experience includes data centres, lighting design, MV & LV reticulation, earthing and electronic systems design. He also has experience working in the renewable energy sector on solar PV projects.

He has been involved in projects ranging from conceptual and detail design to site supervision and contract management. Kevin enjoys working within a multi-disciplinary team.

Project experience — Science and industry

10MW Colocation New Build Data Centre, Confidential Client, The Netherlands, (2023 – ongoing)

Lead electrical engineer on a 10MW IT new build data centre on an existing campus. Key responsibilities includes OFCI tender reviews, contract administration, design coordination and coordinating three electrical engineers working on the project.

Data Centre upgrade, Confidential Client, Lulea, Sweden (2023 – ongoing)

Lead electrical engineer for the upgrade of an existing data centre to support additional IT loads. The project included decommissioning of existing switchboards, addition of new switchboards, PDU’s and UPS’s within a live data centre.

During the design, he coordinated three engineers and two BIM technicians to deliver the project.

18MW Retrofit Data Centre, Confidential Client, The Netherlands, (2023)

Lead Electrical engineer and project manager to deliver the concept design to convert an existing telecommunication building into a 18MW IT data centre. Kevin was responsible to lead a multi-disciplinary team to complete environmental permitting documents as well as the concept design for the building retrofit. The project scope included Civil, Structural, Architectural, MEP and CDF modelling services.

20MW Power to heat energy storage, PepsiCo, The Netherlands, (2022 – 2023)

Lead electrical engineer on an energy storage project to upgrade the client’s existing electrical infrastructure to accommodate the increased electrical load associated with the energy storage system. Kevin’s responsibility included; coordinating the new electrical utility connection, design of a new MV substation, reconfiguring of the existing campus MV network and designing the power supplies to the energy storage system.

30MW Colocation New Build Data Centre, Confidential Client, The Netherlands, (2020 – 2021)

Electrical engineer on a new build data centre to expand the client’s existing facility on a vacant area of land. Kevin was responsible for the high voltage systems, focussing on developing the details for a new utility connection (150kV) and site wide HV and MV reticulation and space planning requirements.

260MW Hyperscale Data Centre Feasibility Study, Confidential Client, Various Locations Globally, (2020)

Lead engineer on a feasibility study for a data centre client on implementing alternative cooling topologies and the effects this would have on their reference designs. Key elements on this project were the optioneering of reduced generator options, HV reticulation across their entire campus development, including failover scenarios under increased load situations.

Data Centre upgrade, Confidential Client, Dublin, Ireland, (2019 – 2023)

Lead electrical engineer for the upgrade of the electrical infrastructure to support increased power demands. This included upgrading of generator sets, recircuiting of distribution boards and additional UPS units. In a live data centre environment.

Data Centre upgrade, Confidential Client, Lulea, Sweden, (2018 – 2023)

Upgrade of the electrical infrastructure to support increased power demands and adjustments to system redundancy. This included re-circuiting of distribution boards and additional UPS units.

Kevin was responsible for the load and circuit calculations required to confirm loads under various failover scenarios. Kevin undertook 3D modelling and lighting simulations for new battery rooms to be added.

Stryker, Limerick, Ireland, (2018 – 2020)

Lead electrical engineer for electrical upgrades and extension works to an existing production facility. He was responsible for the sizing of the electrical infrastructure, electrical concept designs and tender documentation of the electrical scope. The project scope included, lighting design, fire alarm, small power, and electrical reticulation design (MV & LV).

260MW Data Centre project, Confidential Client, Ireland, (2018)

Electrical design for the cooling systems of the data halls and critical network areas. This included the 3D modelling and coordination of the lighting, fire alarm, aspirating smoke detection and main cable containment through confined spaces.

Industrial Warehouse, Bellville, South Africa, (2017 – 2018)

Lead electrical engineer and project manager for the electrical, mechanical, public health and fire engineering services for a new 2500m2 warehouse development.

5MW PV Facility, Kuwait, Middle East, (2016 - 2017)

Electrical design engineer for the concept to detail design of an existing rooftop mounted PV and car canopy mounted PV installation located across two oil storage depot sites in Kuwait.

Kevin was responsible for the electrical design calculations, selection of the multiple connection points into the facility’s existing electrical infrastructure and coordination of equipment.

Solar Capital De Aar 1 PV, De Aar, South Africa, (2016)

Kevin provided monthly reporting duties for an 85MW solar PV plant in South Africa where Arup has been appointed as Owner’s Engineer. Kevin conducted the monthly site inspections and reports on the plant performance and availability.

Project experience — Government

Energy Efficiency and Demand Management Strategy, Umgeni Water, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, (2016 - 2017)

Lead electrical engineer to develop an energy efficiency and demand management strategy for a water utility in South Africa. This strategy included guidelines on reducing overall energy usage and reducing peak demand of new pump stations.

Eskom, Grootvlei Power Station, South Africa, (2013)

Kevin was based at Grootvlei Power Station as an Assistant Engineer for a period of one year. During this experience period he gained valuable experience in the operating and maintenance departments while completing his Engineer in Training Program. During this training program he was actively involved performing hands-on activities with the engineering, operating and maintenance teams.

Project experience — Education

KhwaTtu Museum, West Coast, South Africa, (2017 – 2018)

Arup’s internal project manager leading a team of building physics and mechanical engineers for the thermal comfort analysis and mechanical design of a museum celebrating the San People on the West Coast of South Africa.

University of the Western Cape, Computational Science Centre, Bellville, South Africa, (2014 – 2018)

Kevin is the electrical engineer for the refurbishment of the CSC building, through feasibility to construction monitoring stages. This three-storey, 10 000m2 building, consists of office space, computer labs and lecture rooms.

Project experience — Commercial

KY&CC, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa, (2015 - 2016)

Kevin was the lead electrical engineer on a new build 2 300m2 office and education building in Khayelitsha. The multi-story development consists of office spaces, lecture rooms and a small library. Kevin has been involved from feasibility stage through to detail design, contract management and project close out.
